Two days before he was to appear on the Vince Daniels show, Mr. Beha contacted Daniels to inform him that he received his refund, apparently with a gag order.
While we congratulate him on getting his money back, his is one more voice silenced. Someday, it is hoped that someone will come forward who will not agree to a gag order. We lost the skirmish, but the war's not over.
The war isn't over. I wanted to share my story in hopes that there won't be other victims in the narCONon scam. I just finished writing to Vince Daniels and wanted to post my story where I can. Here is a partial of my son's experience.
Vince,
I wanted to share with you my story about my son’s experience with Narconon Stonehawk in hopes that my voice will be heard and attention be drawn to the “conditions” at Stonehawk and my quest to obtain a refund from Narconon Stonehawk and to further validate that Narconon commits fraud for profit. I’m hoping that this will be broadcasted so that people looking for rehabilitation will stray away from Narconon.
My son entered Narconon Stonehawk on March 8, 2006 & left the program on April 29, 2006 do to the following occurrences which lead me to conclude that his welfare and safety were being compromised by actions and non actions of staff and general living conditions.
On March 10, 2006, my son had to receive medical treatment following an incident where a light fixture in a restroom fell on him while using the restroom. The staff had told him not to tell me of the incident. I was not notified and/or told about the occurrence by anyone on their staff and only learned of it after talking with my son. When I did contact “my” Stonehawk representative regarding the incident, he had told me that he didn’t know anything about it.
I had repeatedly sought accounting of monies spent for my son’s care, both before and after he left and never received anything. I had a recorded voicemail dated April 10, 2006 @ 11:55 am from Owen Tharrington, “my” Stonehawk Representative, that was as follows: “Sorry about the delay in getting the breakdown to your request – never had this request – the treasurer here is going to do an invoice – she’s been on a mini-vacation but finally your request will be taken care of tomorrow.” This leads me to conclude that services performed were not provided, including but not limited to the following:
Medical Detoxification - $2,000.00
Incidental Medical Charge - $500.00
$23,900.00 Program fee – What services were provided to my son up to the point of dismissal??
I had even talked to Per Wickstrom at the time about obtaining the detailed information. He assured me that they would send me the information.
3. I had repeatedly contacted "my" Stone Hawk Rep over concerns about the living facilities that my son was complaining about. The living facilities according to my son were mold and mildew infested, particularly in the bathroom areas, insect infested (killed three poisonous spiders) and the lack of cleanliness in the cooking area of the facility. Despite my request about the actual facilities conditions the problems continued to exist following more concerns from my son. Since my concerns fell on deaf ears, I was going to stop by the facility on Sunday, April 16, 2006 to see the facilities for myself and validate whether my son’s complaints were valid. I had left "my" Stone Hawk Rep a voice message indicating my intentions and for the first time received an immediate response. I was told that I wouldn’t be allowed to view his living quarters because of the chance of personal contact with my son.
The program was promoted and “sold” to me and my son as on that provided one on one counseling and that it had “NOTHING” to do with Scientology only to find out that group sessions were provided.
I have started the process of seeking a refund for the program. After the fact, 2 weeks after my son’s enrollment, I was faxed a copy of the “contract.” Here is what was stated on the contract regarding “Narconon Refund Policy:”
Except as otherwise stated herein, you have been provided with a current copy of the Student Rules of Conduct. These have been explained to you and by signing them you have acknowledged that you understand all of these rules and agree to abide by them. Breaking of these rules can result in immediate eviction from the program and automatically waives any right of repayment for the Narconon program. Part of these reason for this is that the breaking of our rules usually effect and adversely other person’s programs and costs Narconon staff more man hours than normal in handling the situation and those affected by it. There are no refunds except those granted at the sole discretion of the Narconon Stone Hawk Executive Council.
Well, well…I was never given a copy of the Student Rules of Conduct, I was only given a routing number to wire transfer $25,000 + to. If Stonehawk is a “Non-Profit” organization why in the hell would they care about “man” hours unless they are being paid astronomically? My son wasn’t evicted but left because of the conditions of the facility (light fixture falling on his head & no “medical detoxification” – What they claimed as medical detox was taking my son to a basement and have him punch mattresses & I paid $2,000 for that!) and the “brainwashing” techniques that were being administered.
Note: Prior to Stonehawk, my son completed successfully without complaint a 30 day rehab a year prior to Stonehawk.
In conclusion, based on the statement “there are no refunds except those granted at the sole discretion of the Narconon Stone Hawk Executive Council,” I consulted then my fiancé who is an attorney regarding the situation and he assisted me in drafting a letter to the “Executive Council” stating almost everything above. I mailed the letter “Certified” to the “Stone Hawk Executive Council” to the address that Per Wickstrom had given me for the “said” council only for it to be refused.
I contacted Per Wickstrom a couple of weeks ago asking why the letter was refused and he said because he was in Las Vegas. The part he didn’t know is that the letter was’nt addressed to him but to the “Narconon Stone Hawk Executive Council” which now precludes there is no such entity as stated in the contract. He got very belligerent with me about the refund and he told me to “bring it on” he loves a good battle…hmmm…
I would love to talk with you regarding these issues and possibly broadcast a “beware” again of Narconon Stone Hawk. If you would like to discuss further with me, please contact me. I’m hoping you can help me.
Hi,
Thank you for your informative post. One thing I know for sure, and I told this to Mr. Beha as well, Scientology has a firm policy about rejecting and refusing registered and certified mail. Since Narconon is a subsidiary, there's no reason to suspect that they don't adhere to this policy.
One thing we know about refunds: fear of exposure is the only thing these people seem to respond to. Narconon settled with Mr. Beha only days before his anticipated appearance on the Vince Daniels show.
I believe this was also, in part, due to the raising of this message board.
The last thing they want is for parents to get together and start comparing notes. Punching a mattress? !!!!!
I'm happy that you chose to come forward. This message board will develop slowly, but I'm sure it will someday become a valuable resource for people seeking refunds and sharing their stories.
Some people, like Mr. Beha, will accept the gag order to get a refund. This is perfectly understandable, and he was told to get his stories 'out there' beforehand, which he did.
One question, is your son a minor? If so, a whole new set of rules come into play. I hope we can help you make enough noise to get Wickstrom's attention.
Great job you are a role model. I watched the show on the radio on the web and the President looked like and is a fool. Thats why I think this site is great. The only way they get people is through false ads, so lets meet the on the field so to speek, but be honest and true to ourselves. We all know what will prevail. A+. I just felt like I took it. I hope you feel empowered, moast of us are left broke and pissed and have a lot of explaining to do because our parents DONT want to think they wasted their money. Its hard to tell them that when their intentions were so good..........Ya know?
Peace
